Hope in the Unseen
A visual witness from the first few months of sheltering-in-place by various artists around the theme of faith in God’s moving despite the dark.
// "This season has been a real challenge to trust God with all the unknowns. I started dealing with anxiety, feeling overwhelmed most of the time, and even sadness as I was making up scenarios of what could potentially happen. It truly felt that I was always in darkness… It still feels this way sometimes. But one day, God spoke to me and said, “Fix your eyes on what is eternal, unchanging. I will never leave you, and I will always guide you. You’re mine forever.” It changed everything. I could breathe and remember who Christ is for me. Circumstances are always changing, seasons will always be a variation of ups and downs, but Jesus will always be the same. " –Clémence Bonin (France)
"The storm in our minds can become a veil to prevent us from seeing the hope that is to come. In a time when there are many uncertainties, hope is frightening because it is unknown and yet it is also the very thing we long to hold onto. Hope is a feeling of something that is coming...it is something you may not know what it is or when it will be, but there is a feeling something better is to come. Hope is like a light that is within you and it wants to shine through to be the very light you see. When you plant a seed, you know something beautiful is going to come, but you cannot see it….yet. What could be this storm in one’s mind? Anxiety? Fear? Worry? Depression? I don’t know the things your heart is going through right now, but no matter where you are, know this: you are deeply loved and cared for! Turn your eyes to Christ the Creator, Savior, Redeemer -- our hope -- and ask Him to unveil anything that might be hindering you to see the full Hope that is to come because God is on the throne and reigns above it all." –Hannah Siu (United States)
“This piece was created with acrylic paint and inspired by the view outside my window. During this time of quarantine, being inside my house has been bittersweet. I feel bitter not being able to see what’s going on. Also because of the awareness that there’s a lot going on. But at the same time, being able to just stop, rest, and breath feels sweet. Sometimes spending too much time inside the same place can feel dark and hopeless. But every time I see through my window, I can see hope. Every time I see the trees moving from the wind, I see hope. Every time I see the shapes of the clouds and the sunset dyed with thousands of colors, I can truly see hope. Hope to believe that this is not the end. This is just a pause and I need to have hope for the time that is coming. Hope to wait for that desire. Hope to desire for that awakening. The black color represents the bittersweet feeling of being inside home. Hope is represented in the sunset that you can see out of the window.” –Gerardo Ramirez (Mexico)
"The beauty behind geode rocks is how normal or plain they look on the outside, while hidden on the inside are beautiful colors and patterns that you would have never thought existed." –Rediet Serrano (United States)
"There are times in life where we are tangibly aware of growth and something happening –changing perhaps– inside us, be it mind, heart, body, or otherwise. And then, there are those other times –more commonly maybe– where it just isn’t seen. No abrupt changes of direction, confronting emotions, profound soul searching or the like… but just a kind of knowing. A perceiving and trusting –nay, hoping– that there are in fact changes occurring, something having been set into motion that will not leave us the same as we were. We shall be better for it, for this innerworking deep within." –Meghan Dineen (United States)
"Have you ever thought about how God has already let us into His plans? We get the privilege of knowing what comes after the egg, chrysalis, and bud. In fact, we wait expectantly, anticipating the beauty that will emerge. I pray that we could approach our lives in the same fashion. For God has even greater things in store for us!" –Caitlin Ng (United States)
"This piece was created with the heart of expectation. I explored the way the light falls on the planes of the face as the sun rises. While the sun sets, we know for sure that it will rise again, night is merely a shadow and we can wait with expectation for the sun’s rays to again warm our faces. I wanted to convey through this metaphor the assurance in which we can actively hope in times of darkness. That to ‘hope’ is maybe not to only dream of a hypothetical possibility, but rather in peace we can hold this tension of waiting in faith for the future, while investing a period in the shadows. Time is not wasted and it’s faith that makes us sure. Hebrews 11:1" –Michaela Simon (Australia)

I will go before you and level the mountains,
I will break in pieces the doors of bronze and cut through the bars of iron,
I will give you the treasures of darkness and riches hidden in secret places,
so that you may know that it is I, the Lord, the God of Israel, who call you by your name.
— Isaiah 45:2–3
