STEPHANIE CHEUNG

This piece was created out of love, from tearful conversations I had with my mom and her two sisters as they reflected on their childhood in Hong Kong, the life of their mother (my Poh Poh), and where they drew strength from in their  journey from Hong Kong to America. The black and white photos show the past and present state of our family.

The resilient poppy is my mom’s favorite flower. The dual-tone’d depiction of the Chinese characters exhibit two layers tied together: the lived immigrant experiences of these sisters and my own second-generation experience.

The English translations and pronunciations denote the depths of my Cantonese-American heart and posture towards understanding more of where I come from and who I am becoming. Each page’s word and theme was chosen to honor and represent crucial moments and the essence of our story. This is just the beginning, more stories to come and cheers to all the strong women in our lives!
